Cowara Motorsport Team Impress at Motorplex -

Saturday 9 November, 2013. | Ken Brown |

Cameron Gessner and the Cowara Motorsport team showed that they are a force to be reckoned with at the second meeting of the 2013-14 season at the Perth Motorplex last Saturday night.

The #41 Maxim car was right on the pace all night and team owner Steve Duggan was very pleased with their performance.

"We are pretty happy at the moment," said Duggan. "We have the car set up pretty sharp and we are confident that we can keep the momentum going."

Gessner clocked the second fastest time (14.408 seconds) in the time trial and finished a creditable second in both of his heat races.

He started out of position 4 in the main event (the 34-lap Magic Man 34 tribute event) and quickly raced up to second spot behind veteran Mark Wells.

On lap 9 Troy Beckingham, who was about to be lapped, slid into Gessner's path.

Contact was made with Beckingham rolling over and Gessner sliding to a halt.

Under the racing rules Gessner and the Cowara Motorsport car had to line up at the rear of the field.

When the race resumed he was back in position 17 (minus the front wing) with around 24 laps left to run.

"I took it pretty easy for the first couple of laps," said Gessner, "As I wasn't sure if the car had suffered any more damage."

"It was a lot different without the front wing - you don't realise how important that wing is until you don't have one."

Despite the handicap Gessner began moving through the field in fine style.

He began passing cars and crossed the line in fifth spot - a brilliant performance under the circumstances.

Gessner was actually right on the tail of fourth placed Brad Maiolo at the finish of the event.

Third placed Luke Dillon became the first driver to play his "Joker" card on the night - to double his points tally.

Dillon currently leads the AHG Sprintcar Series pointscore over the race winner David Priolo with Gessner a close third.

"We are still to decide when we will use our "Joker" card," said Duggan.

This Saturday night sees the Cowara Motorsport team head to Bunbury for the third round of the AHG Sprintcar Series.

Then it's back to the Perth Motorplex on November 23 for the running of the annual 'King of the Wings' event.
