Harding Walks Away Happy

The King of The Wings event is one of those Sprintcar events that is a little different, where you need to not only have a quick car, but a good strategy as well. Over forty laps, split in the middle with a pit stop after the first twenty, you have to have your wits about you all night.

Add to this only the one chance to gain points with a single qualifying heat makes it twice as tough as the normal events you compete in for the SEG Series.

It all began well for Daniel and the team, making a qualifying run well inside the top half of the field. The team made a decision to try and get some more speed from their KRE 410ci powerplant by adjusting the fuel-air ratio. This proved to be a wrong move.

“We just put too much fuel into it” explained Daniel later “basically it drowned the motor. The engine stumbled and mis-fired all through our heat and it cost us. We went from third to ninth and lost a lot of points towards our starting spot for the final.”

The team bounced back from this, curing the problems before the Mid Pack Madness event. Harding, starting from third had the pace to run with the front two cars, who had originally out qualified him in Time Trials, leaving the talented steerer feeling confident going into the twin twenty lap finals.

Starting from position sixteen, Harding showed he had a car with the potential to make an impact come race end. From the outset he began passing cars, handily picking away at those in front of him and gaining positions as he went. As the chequered flag fell at the mid race distance, Harding had made his way up inside the top ten, an impressive run in itself, though there was still twenty laps to go.

“The car was just brilliant. Anywhere I put it on the track it felt great, top or the bottom, the car work well. It showed all the work the boys had done back in the pits did the trick. I was so looking forward to the second half of the race, little did I realise it was going to fall apart” said Harding afterwards.

Once the green light came on to commence the second half, Harding once again started to move forward from his eighth starting position, making his presence felt and battling towards a podium finish. Harding felt this could eventuate to be his best result in the 410ci brigade, only for it to come to a stop when his front wing fell apart, the result of opening lap contact with another competitor in the first twenty lap race.

From that point on Harding began to struggle with keeping the front wheels of his red, white and black machine on the ground. “The track was still pretty tacky and had plenty of drive. I tried to adjust my the car and my driving style as good as I could, but in the end the car was too unstable and in the end we spun out.”

Yes it fell apart result wise with a final lap spin that credited him with a DNF against his name, but the determined young racer walked away happy with the knowledge that the he and his team are finally close with the base set up for the racecar, one that can be used at a myriad of tracks.

“Trev, Tonka and the rest of the team have really done a great job working away at the chassis setup on the car. We finally have a base setup that seems to give us a great start now. We used it now at Bunbury, Pithara and at the Motorplex and I’m happy to say it’s a great starting point to start the night off with.”

“Although we never grabbed the result we could of tonight, I more than happy with the direction we have been heading with the car and this is the most confident I have felt in the car since we started racing a Sprintcar. Thats what I need though, that confidence, as we are getting close to hitting the road soon and racing against the best from Australia and some of the best from around the world. It will be tough but I feel really good that we can make an impression over east this summer.”

With only a handful of events left for Harding before he heads east, he and the team sit in a fantastic position as a group and cant wait to hit the track again this upcoming weekend at Bunbury for another round of the Southern Thunder Series to put in another good performance.
