Oldfield joins sprintcar crowd

JAMIE Oldfield will be one of the established speedway names who will contest the Shannons Powerpalooza Grand Opening Showdown at the Perth Motorplex on Saturday, October 28 - but not as regular race fans would be expecting.

On the back of one of his most successful seasons in Late Model racing, described as “an absolute awesome year” and included winning the Pro Dirt Series and the Perth Motorplex track championship, you would expect Oldfield to be back for more right?

In fact he was planning on sitting this season out, saving some money and working towards some other goals - that was until he was approached by a sprintcar team owner.

Now he will be a regular driver in sprintcar action in both the 360 Power Series and the AHG Sprintcar Series (for 410s).

“If I can leave my car in the shed and drive for someone else, I would be mad not to do it,” Oldfield said.

“And I still get to do what I love doing.”

Oldfield is no stranger to sprintcars, having had a couple of stints racing with a wing over his head.

“Back then it was older equipment - I just got in for the sake of having a go,” Oldfield said.

“This time we have got better equipment and a new car - it’s still an older engine but it will do the job for what I need it to do.”

Oldfield started off with a 360 at Ellenbrook two weeks ago (where he claimed a podium) and will also be racing the 360 in Pithara this weekend, as well as at the first Motorplex show.

“We will start off with that and then switch it out and put the 410 in it.

“We will just do as many shows as budget allows.

“Obviously we are not a big budget team and we are not going to race every single show, but we will certainly give it a go.

“If we tear stuff up that is obviously going to cost us some race meetings down the track.

“I suppose the longer we go without tearing stuff up, the more races we will get to do.”
